Damage in The Division 2 looks complicated, but it's really just your gun's base damage passed through a chain of multipliers. This guide explains that chain in plain English — what each stat actually does, why some talents are worth far more than others, and how burst and sustain DPS are worked out. 1. It starts with your Weapon Damage number
The big Weapon Damage number on your in-game Weapon Stats page is your starting point. It already bakes in your gear, brand sets, cores, watch, expertise and mods — so you don't need to add those again. Everything below is a multiplier applied on top of that number.
That's the key idea: your final damage per shot is a series of "×(1 + something)" steps stacked one after another.
2. Weapon Damage vs Total Weapon Damage
This is the most misunderstood part of the game, and it's where builds win or lose damage.
- Weapon Damage — from cores, attributes, expertise and most gear. These all add together into one pool, and that pool boosts your damage a single time. Ten sources of +10% Weapon Damage behave like one +100%.
- Total Weapon Damage — from specific talents such as Vigilance, Focus or Obliterate. This sits in its own separate multiplier, stacked on top of the Weapon Damage pool rather than mixed into it.
- Gear-set & exotic multipliers — a few sources (like the Striker's Gamble stack) multiply on their own again, separate from everything else.
Because these live in different multipliers, a point of Total Weapon Damage is usually worth more than a point of plain Weapon Damage — it isn't being diluted by the big additive pool.
3. Critical hits and headshots
Critical Hit Chance is how often you crit; Critical Hit Damage is how much bigger those crits are. Crit chance is capped at 60% — anything higher is wasted unless something raises the cap (the Redline overdrive event lifts it to 85%).
Headshot Damage multiplies shots that hit the head. Since you won't land every shot on the head, DPS is best judged with a realistic headshot rate — which is why the calculator lets you set that percentage with a slider.
4. Damage to Armor, Health and out of cover
Enemies have an armor bar and then a health bar, and different bonuses apply to each:
- Damage to Armor only helps while the enemy still has armor.
- Damage to Health only helps once the armor is gone (or against unarmored, red-bar enemies).
- Damage to Targets Out of Cover applies when the enemy is exposed — the vast majority of the time in PvE.
Each of these is its own multiplier, which is why a proper time-to-kill has to strip armor first, then chew through health.
5. Rate of fire, magazine and reload — burst vs sustain
Damage per shot is only half the story; how fast you land those shots decides your real DPS.
- Burst DPS — the damage you pump out firing a single magazine, ignoring reloads. Driven by rate of fire and per-shot damage.
- Sustain DPS — the same fight but with reloads included, so it reflects longer engagements. Driven by magazine size and reload speed as well.
Rate-of-fire bonuses add onto your gun's base fire rate, and magazine and reload bonuses stack additively too. A build with huge per-shot damage but a tiny mag can have great burst and mediocre sustain — the calculator shows both so you can see the trade-off.
6. Temporary buffs — why some only lift Burst
Some of the strongest bonuses aren't always on. Weapon-swap buffs like Back and Forth, Agitator's primed swap, and Centurion's Scabbard only last a handful of seconds after you swap. Because they fade, they mainly boost the opening Burst, not your steady-state Sustain:
- Back and Forth — a short (~10s) swap buff, so the calculator only applies it to Burst and the charts, never Sustain.
- Agitator / Whiplash — a longer primed window (~15s), so they hit Burst in full and give Sustain a partial share (roughly one window per prime cycle).
- Centurion's Scabbard — cycles two phases you can't hold at once: a damage phase (rate of fire + weapon damage, a Burst gain) and a reload phase (mag size + reload speed, a Sustain gain).
That's why the calculator separates Burst and Sustain rather than showing one number: a temporary buff can look huge in the first magazine and barely move a drawn-out fight.
6. Events and global modifiers
Limited-time overdrive events and seasonal global modifiers stack on top of everything above. For example, Redline raises your crit chance cap and adds crit and reload; Deadeye adds headshot and weapon damage. The calculator lets you toggle these to see exactly how much they change your numbers.
7. Putting it all together
Every shot is essentially your Weapon Damage number run through this chain, in order:
Multiply that per-shot figure by your fire rate for burst DPS, or factor in the reload for sustain DPS. Do it by hand and it's fiddly — which is exactly why the tool exists.
